Nitrous System (NOS) showed the world how to effectively harness the power of nitrous oxide for automotive use in the 1970's. Nitrous is an often used abbreviation for the chemical compound nitrous oxide (N2O) also referred to as NOS. Nitrous oxide is an oxidizing agent used to increase an engine's power output by allowing more fuel (usually gasoline or alcohol) to be burned than would normally be the case. Nitrous oxide is stored as a liquid in tanks, but because of its low boiling point it vaporizes easily when released to atmosphere. Nitrous can increase power by as little as 0. Nitrous is not for everyone, some people prefer turbos, some like blowers, and others feel it is cheating to use nitrous. Nitrous is some times used in auto racing to speed combustion. Nitrous is used to speed engines for auto racing. Nitrous oxide however enters as a liquified gas and expands on leaving the injectors, and as a gas expands it's temperature drops thus inhibiting detonation. Nitrous oxide is a colorless, non-flammable gas. Once you pass the 35% power increase mark with nitrous oxide you need to look at things like forged pistons, better connectiing rods, better bearings, etc. As you can see, nitrous oxide is like any other power increasing modification in that, when used wisely and installed properly, it works well.
